Coinbase Wallet Extension® — Getting Started

A browser wallet can put decentralized apps just a click away. It also puts more responsibility in your hands. This guide walks through the basics in plain language, so you can make informed choices at every step.

Independent guide, not an official Coinbase page. Product screens and supported features can change. Confirm current instructions on Coinbase’s official website before installing or moving assets.

01THE BASICS

What is a Coinbase Wallet extension?

A browser wallet is software that helps you manage supported digital assets and interact with blockchain applications from a desktop browser. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet product: depending on the wallet setup and current product features, you control access to the wallet rather than relying on an exchange account to approve each on-chain action. The extension can make it easier to review a site connection, choose an account, and approve eligible transactions without leaving your browser.

It is helpful to distinguish a self-custody wallet from a Coinbase account. They are related products, but they do not necessarily share the same access, recovery, or support process. A wallet may be able to connect with decentralized exchanges, collectibles platforms, and other Web3 services. Availability varies by network, region, browser, and product version. A wallet connection does not mean Coinbase has reviewed, endorsed, or guarantees the safety of the connected site.

One important principle: a wallet connection grants a website limited access to interact with your wallet; it is not the same thing as handing the site your password. Review each permission and transaction on its own merits.

02BEFORE YOU INSTALL

Start with the source, not a search ad

Scam extensions often imitate familiar names and artwork. Begin at Coinbase’s official Wallet page by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Follow its current link to the supported browser’s extension store. Check the publisher, listing details, and requested permissions before adding anything. A familiar icon alone is not proof of authenticity. Avoid sponsored search results, unsolicited direct messages, download mirrors, and links sent by strangers.

Use a browser you keep up to date, and install updates only through the browser’s official store or the product’s own verified update mechanism. If an installation page asks you to paste a recovery phrase into a website, stop. A legitimate wallet setup should not require you to disclose that phrase to a support agent, an online form, or a site claiming to “validate” your account.

03INSTALLATION

Install the extension thoughtfully

Open Coinbase’s official Wallet page, choose the extension option available for your browser, and follow its link to the browser’s official extension store. Read the listing carefully, confirm the publisher and permissions, and use the browser’s add or install control. Exact labels differ among browsers and can change as their interfaces are updated. After installation, find the wallet through your browser’s extensions menu. Pinning it to the toolbar is optional and simply makes the extension easier to open.

Before entering any sensitive information, verify that the extension opened from the browser’s own interface and that the address or store listing matches the official source. If something feels unusual—unexpected permission requests, an unfamiliar setup page, or pressure to act quickly—close it and verify instructions through the official Coinbase help center. Do not install a second “recovery” add-on suggested by a pop-up.

04WALLET SETUP

Create a wallet or import an existing one

Choose the setup path that matches your intention. Creating a wallet establishes a new wallet and its recovery method; importing connects an existing compatible wallet using the method the official product supports. Read every screen before proceeding. If you are unsure whether you already have a wallet or which recovery method you used, stop and consult official help rather than experimenting with phrases or credentials.

During setup, you may be shown a recovery phrase or another recovery option depending on your product version. Treat recovery material as the master key to your wallet. Store it offline in a private, secure place where you can retrieve it if your device is lost. Never photograph it, email it, place it in cloud notes, or share it in chat. Coinbase support will never need you to disclose your secret recovery phrase. Anyone who obtains it may be able to take the assets it protects, and blockchain transfers are generally difficult or impossible to reverse.

05FIRST CONNECTION

Connect only when you understand the request

To use a decentralized application, navigate to its verified website independently, then use its connect-wallet control. Select the wallet option and account you intend to use. The extension should display a request you can review before confirming. Check the site address, account, network, and permissions. If the request does not match what you expected, reject it and investigate before trying again.

A connection by itself may let an app see a public wallet address or request certain interactions. It does not automatically make every later request safe. Read transaction details before signing: what asset is involved, which network is selected, what approval is being requested, and whether the amount or permissions look right. Token approvals can authorize a contract to access assets under stated conditions, sometimes beyond a single immediate action. When available, limit approvals to what you need and review or revoke old permissions using trusted tools. Never approve a transaction just because a website says it is required to claim a prize.

06SECURITY CHECKLIST

Keep control of your wallet

Self-custody gives you direct control, but it also means you are responsible for protecting access. Use a strong, unique device password, enable your browser’s security updates, and secure the email or accounts associated with your setup. Consider a hardware wallet for additional protection if supported and appropriate for your needs. Keep only the funds you need in a wallet used to explore unfamiliar apps; never risk money you cannot afford to lose.

  • 01
    Guard the recovery phrase.

Keep it private and offline. No legitimate helper needs you to send it.

  • 02
    Verify every URL.

Impersonation sites use lookalike spellings and urgent prompts.

  • 03
    Read before signing.

Confirm the network, destination, amount, and approval scope.

  • 04
    Be skeptical of support DMs.

Find help through the official site, not an unsolicited message.

There is no guaranteed way to reverse a mistaken blockchain transaction. If you suspect your phrase or wallet has been exposed, use a trusted device and the official recovery guidance as soon as possible. Do not respond to “recovery experts” who promise to retrieve funds for an upfront fee; recovery scams frequently target people who have already lost assets.

07HELPFUL ANSWERS

Common questions, answered

Why does a site not detect my wallet?

Confirm that you installed the official extension for a supported browser, that it is enabled, and that both your browser and wallet are current. Some sites work only with particular networks or wallet versions. Close and reopen the site after checking settings; never install an unknown add-on to “fix” detection.

Why is a transaction pending or unavailable?

Network congestion, a selected network mismatch, insufficient funds for network fees, or changing product support may affect an action. Review the pending transaction in the wallet and use official help for current guidance. Avoid clicking repeated prompts or sharing transaction details with strangers.

Where should I go for account or wallet help?

Use Coinbase’s official website and help center, reached directly through a verified address. Support channels and available recovery options can change. Never provide a password, one-time code, private key, or recovery phrase to someone contacting you unexpectedly.

A little patience is part of using a wallet well. Start with a small, low-risk action, check each prompt, and learn the network and fee details before moving anything valuable.
